Atlanta Metro Area Traffic Report 2002 - 2004
Traffic accidents cost the Atlanta region $4.7B annually

The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) reported in October 2006 from its "Traffic Crash Profiles for the Atlanta Region."

18 counties -- Barrow, Bartow, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Newton, Paulding, Rockdale, Spalding and Walton

  • Traffic accidents takes place every 2.8 minutes on surface streets across the 18-county metro area
  • Regional cost of traffic crashes: $4.7 billion a year
  • Approximately 45% of the 189,422 crashes each year take place at intersections
  • Of the 10 most crash-prone intersections in the region, half are in Cobb County.
    • Austell Road at East-West Connector (Cobb, 477 crashes)
    • Barrett Parkway at Cobb Place Boulevard (Cobb, 377)
    • Cobb Parkway at Barrett Parkway (Cobb, 376)
    • Tara Boulevard at North Avenue (Clayton, 368)
    • Sigman Road at Walnut Grove Road (Rockdale, 324)
    • Buford Highway at Lenox Road (Fulton, 316)
    • Chastain Road at Busbee Parkway (Cobb, 296)
    • Alpharetta Highway at Houze Way (Fulton, 291)
    • Austell Road at South Cobb Drive (Cobb, 263)
    • Roswell Road at Abernathy Road (Fulton, 231)
    Most collisions in the 18-county region per year
    • Fulton County, 47,955
    • DeKalb: 32,671
    • Gwinnett: 27,776
    • Cobb: 26,742
    • Clayton: 11,939
    The average annual crash rate per county: 10,523
    Most crash-prone time of day: 5:01 p.m. to 6 p.m., nearly 16,000 accidents annually
    • More than 25% of all crashes: People ages 25 to 34
    • People ages 16 to 34 account for nearly half of all accidents
    • Those 65 to 74 account for about 3 percent of crashes.
    Rear-end collisions: 43% of all crashes annually
    • Following too closely: 38 percent of all crashes
    • Failure to yield: 17%
    • Improper lane change: 8%
    • Driver losing control: 5%
    Fatalities in traffic collisions in the 18-county region annually: 562
    • Fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled: 1.1
    • Fatal crash occurs once every 15.6 hours in the region
    • Fatal crashes at intersections: 28%
    • Injury crashes: 45,754
    • Injuries per year: 68,310
    Spalding County injury rate/100 million vehicle miles traveled at 208.4
    • Clayton: 168.9
    • DeKalb 162.5
    • Gwinnett: 142.4
    • Douglas 140.8
    • Average annual county injury rate: 137.9
