Auto Insurance

Auto insurance is generally composed of six different types of coverage. Some may be required by law depending on the state, and others are optional.

These coverages include:
  1. Bodily injury liability, for injuries the policyholder causes to someone else.
  2. Medical payments or Personal Injury Protection (PIP), for treatment of injuries to the driver and passengers of the policyholder's car.
  3. Property damage liability, for damage the policyholder causes to someone else's property.
  4. Collision, for damage to the policyholder's car from a collision.
  5. Comprehensive, for damage to the policyholder's car not involving a collision with another car (including damage from fire, explosions, earthquakes, floods, and riots), and theft.
  6. Uninsured motorists coverage, for costs resulting from an accident involving a hit-and-run driver or a driver who does not have insurance.

Insured Vehicles In The U.S.

The latest figures available indicate 169 million vehicles were insured in the United States (excluding Texas). A significant majority of these vehicles were insured through what is called the Voluntary Market whereby vehicle owners obtain insurance in the open market. Only 2.7 million vehicles, or 1.6 percent, were insured in what is called the Shared Market, whereby state insurance plans of last resort are available at higher rates for those who cannot qualify under regular underwriting criteria for insurance.
