Termites and Homeowners Insurance
Vermin are plentiful across the Southeast that may attack one's home, but termites can cause considerable damage and the homeowner is typically without homeowners insurance coverage since most homeowners policies exclude damage from vermin. That includes a number of so-called "critters" such as rats, mice, raccoons, squirells and termites just to name a few.
In most cases, a homeowner can contact a critter removal company that will put out poison or traps and solve the problem quickly.
Termites, on the other hand, are usually harder to find, make no noise, and often create expensive damage before they are spotted in a home. Termites are not the type of infestation that can be stopped with traps or screen covers.
What is very important for a homeowner to know is that if a home is not protected against termites, not only will major damage eventually occur, but that damage may result in the homeowner loosing the ability to sell the property until the damage is repaired and a termite bond is in place through a pest control company.
The most useful way to deal with termites is to never let the problem begin in the first place. A perspective homeowner should have the property inspected before purchase or have a valid termite bond that is provided by the seller
Once the property is purchased, a termite company should be retained to do regular inspections and provide assurances that there are no termites invading the home. As the old saying goes, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
